Everything Falls

For the past few years, Whanganui-based artist, Andrea du Chatenier has been occupied by a Sisyphean level of material endeavour. As she writes, “A little psychoanalysis might be necessary for me to fully understand the level of stress addiction I have when it comes to making work. Firing ceramic and glass together is theoretically next to impossible — the two materials contract at different rates as they cool, making cracking inevitable. Too much cracking, breaking, slumping or melting can really bring me down. Finding pleasure in ceramic failure is something I learned from my father’s pottery-making days. He used an oil-fired kiln and we’d all stand around with uncontrolled excitement as it was opened to reveal a cavern of wonderment — deformed pots, things stick to kiln shelves, blobby glazes and the occasional object of perfection. We marvelled at it all. Opening a kiln should always be better than Christmas!”
